In every celebration of the Eucharist, Bishops, Priests, and Deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as Ordinary Ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord. When the size of the congregation or a lack of sufficient Clergy requires it, the Clergy may be assisted by Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion. These are lay members of the Parish who have received training by either the Clergy or designated Lay Assistants and have been authorized by the Pastor to serve in this capacity. Extraordinary Ministers are expected to set an example in how to express reverence by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine.
All Catholics in good standing who complete the required preparation and training and regularly attend at either St. Elizabeth of the Hill Country or Church of the Epiphany are welcome to participate in this program. Volunteers are always welcome. The program is open to male and female parishioners and university students who are regular attendees.
If you have an interest in becoming an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Communion, you may contact the Church Office during the week or speak with Lay Assistant Ed Herring at any Mass to get more information. University students can also ask Erin Kotlowski at Catholic Campus Ministries to let the Parish know of your interest.
If you have already been trained or you would like to learn more through training or you wish to be placed on a schedule to serve, please contact Ed Herring (click for email) and let him know of your interest and what Masses you are available for and what Masses you cannot serve. You can also call or text him at 828-266-8553. He is available to speak with you in the Parish Office during the week by appointment.
Extraordinary Minister Assignments are posted on the Website Events Calendar as they are prepared. You can see who is assigned to each Mass on the Calendar. Printed schedules are placed in the Gathering Space hallway and posted on the Gathering Space closet bulletin board.
