Give Your Heart Away 2019
68 Catholic Campus Ministry college students from around the Charlotte Diocese descended upon the Catholic Conference Center just south of Hickory over the weekend of February 15-16-17 to volunteer at Catawba County area nursing homes, food pantries, and other non-profits. Some even cleared overgrown brush at the Center. Local AppState students who participated are pictured along with AppState Campus Minister Erin Kotlowski. Good Work, Folks!
Thanks to initial inspiration provided by one of our CCM Student Parishioners, the Knights of Columbus were able to procure 30,000 diapers for use in our community. Clair Williams, an AppState senior, and active leader in AppState CCM, AppState Students for Life, and the NC Right to Life movement, as well as a Lector volunteer at St. Elizabeth, was presenting the AppState Students for Life Diaper Drive for Hope Pregnancy Center to St. Elizabeth parishioners before the Christmas break. She was describing why her organization does this and why it is so important and very much needed in our county. A member of our Knights of Columbus council, Jack Ryan, was listening to her and realized that he might have a connection that could help. Before it was over, his connection at a diaper manufacturing plant in Macon, Georgia had caused the donation and shipment, free of charge, of 30,000 brand new diapers to Watauga County for distribution, as needed, by The Children's Council of Watauga County. If you haven't met Clair and Jack, please make an effort to do so. They are both very special people who have made a huge difference in the lives of a lot of people in this county.
Catholic Campus Ministry thanks you! Your participation in the CCM raffle this year helped raise $33,000 and that is quickly being translated into weekly suppers, supportive Catholic community bible studies, retreats, and other enrichment activities for students at universities across the diocese. Thank you for your great generosity! We at CCM pray that our generous God will bless you in return!
AppState Students for Life have finished a hugely successful Third Annual Diaper Drive. Their collections this year more than doubled last year. They report more than 1300 diapers, more than 1200 wipes, and numerous other baby items were contributed for donation to the Hope Crisis Pregnancy Center. Thank you to all who contributed or otherwise helped!
Fr. Matthew traveled to Asheville on Saturday, December 15 to officiate at the beautiful wedding of two of our own from AppState, Olivia Maita and Joe Coffey. Joe was received into the Church through St. E's RCIA program several years ago. Olivia was his sponsor. Congratulations, Olivia and Joe! Best wishes for a wonderful future!
Some of our App State students graduated this semester at the December 15 Commencement Ceremonies. Congratulations to all of you! We're really going to miss you! We wish you all the best and much success in life. Stay in touch, keep the Faith, and come visit when you can!
The weekend of October 19-20-21 was the annual Parents' Weekend at Appalachian State. If you were at the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday, October 21, you noticed that it was Parents' Weekend here, too. An overflow crowd filled both the Sanctuary and the Gathering Space to capacity and slightly beyond. It was great to see so many visitors. Come again soon!
